The Budget Lip Kits

The Budget Lip Kits - Lottie London, Makeup Revolution & Barry M

Liquid lipsticks have been on trend for some time now, starting off with high end brands  such as ABH, Jeffree Star & Kylie Beauty, which truly made a statement in the beauty industry. It also encouraged a lot of other brands to start creating their own liquid lipstick options & recently it seems that drugstore brands have also jumped on the bandwagon. This is brilliant as it means that regardless of your budget, you will be able to experience liquid lipsticks for yourself. Today I am focusing on three affordable brands that can be found in your local Superdrug store, which are currently promoting budget lip kits. I've actually ever tried a lip kit before, so I was quite excited to check them all out.

Firstly I'll start off with my least favourite of the bunch... I'm sorry Barry M but this Matte Me Up Lip Kit in shade Pose £6.99 is just not my cup of tea. Firstly let's start off with the one thing that annoyed me from the very beginning and that is the packaging. Before I even applied this on my lips I made the mistake of tilting the lipstick over as I was swatching it on the back on my hand. Huge mistake as I ended up pouring a ton of it on my clothes. I'm not sure if it's due to the super liquidy texture or maybe the fact that it doesn't have somewhat of a stopper, but it's definitely the first time that's happened to me & it made me extremely weary of using the product. Secondly I find the lip pencil that comes within the kit quite drying... maybe it should be warmed up on the back of the hand or something, but I was quite disappointed to feel this tugging at my lips whilst using it. Lastly I'm not happy with the difference in the shade between the lip liner and the actual liquid lipstick. As you can see in the photos here, the lipstick is much lighter than the lip liner and comes out a super pale pink  shade when applied. This kind of pale shade isn't really flattering for me personally so it does put me off wearing it. I know I sound like a moany myrtle and that a lot of you actually love these Barry M lip kits, but it just didn't work for me and I have to be honest. So if you are planning on getting one of these lip kits I do recommend to swatch in store for shade referencing and to be super careful with the packaging.

Next up I have my first ever metallic liquid lipstick in the form of Makeup Revolution Retro Luxe Metallic Lip Kit in shade We Rule. It seems like metallic lips are all the rage at the moment so I really wanted to try them out for myself and see what all the hype was about. I decided to try a budget brand like MUR first in case I wasn't a fan of the metallic look and I am so happy I didn't spend a fortune on this lip kit.. because I have to say I'm not quite sure I like the overall finish. Maybe I'm just too old (nearing 30 this summer eek), but I'm just not sure that I can pull off these metallic lips plus I feel like overall result accentuates any fine lines in my lips making them look really unflattering. To top it off I'm also not a huge fan of the formula that Makeup Revolution have created here, I'm really sorry to disappoint anyone that loves these lip kits. The lip liner is super glittery when applied to the lips and I don't really find that it helps to outline the lips before I apply the liquid lipstick or that it does anything at all to be honest. I've actually found it more useful when I apply it on my waterline to give me that wide awake look, so if like me you don't find it works for your lips do try it on the eyes. The formula of the liquid lipstick is extremely opaque and does apply super smoothly on the lips, but what I don't like is that it never dries down fully. It leaves a super tacky feeling behind and if you press your lips together you will find it quite sticky. Because of this issue, it does transfer quite a bit and it's not as long lasting as most liquid lipsticks. For the price tag of £6 I don't rule out ever trying one of these lip kits but just be aware that they aren't perfect.

I promise this post isn't all negative, as I have saved the best for last and that is the Lottie London Slay All Day Lip Kit in shade Fleek. I ordered this online from Superdrug and it was only when I went to write up this post and checked my order receipt that I realised I ended up receiving the wrong shade. Instead of the more pinky nude TBT which I originally ordered, Superdrug sent me out Fleek, a more muted brown kind of nude. To be honest I am quite happy with this shade regardless as it looks gorgeous on the lips and the formula is amazing too. This is my first time trying out the brand and I have to say I am quite impressed, plus receiving the wrong shade only means one thing... I will have to pick up the shade I originally ordered and check out the other products on offer, just so I can experience a bit more from the brand. This is the most expensive option form the three I have here priced at £8.99 (still super affordable) and I feel like you can tell, because everything from the packaging to the actual products feel and look well made. The lip liner applies super smoothly and feels creamy on the lips, so it's not drying at all. The liquid lipstick is pigmented so you only need one swipe for full coverage. It dries matte within seconds but what I love most is that it doesn't dry out my lips, it actually feels quite lightweight and comfortable to wear, so throughout the day I forget I am even wearing lipstick. I definitely recommend you check out these lip kits if you're looking for an affordable liquid lipstick that is great quality too.

So that's my experience with budget liquid lipsticks and to be honest it wasn't 100% positive, as I really don't think I will end up using the Barry M or Makeup Revolution options in the future, which is a shame. I am however happy I discovered Lottie London as a brand and that their lip kits are truly worth every penny. I'd love to hear your thoughts on any of the lip kits above... have you tried any? If not what would you recommend as your favourite liquid lipstick (it can be budget or high end)...
