As soon as you walk into Mercante you get a welcoming sense... it has a rustic design with modern touches throughout, it's not pretentious but instead you immediately get a homely atmosphere. It's definitely the kind of place suitable for a big family dinner out with plenty of chatter & laughter. In a way you almost forget you're in a 'posh' 5 star hotel in Mayfair (which is perfect for me, as I'm definitely not one for fancy dinners).
The menu focuses on "a range of dishes that represent Italy as a whole" and is served tapas style. The head chef Davide D'ignazzio wanted to produce dishes that showcased produce from his home country & also bring together his experience from some of the best Roman kitchens. I think he's pulled it off perfectly and seeing as Italian food is probably my favourite cuisine, the menu certainly didn't disappoint. I also loved that for every dish you had the option to choose either small or large, which makes sharing so much easier & more enjoyable too. Price wise it was actually quite reasonable considering the location, with prices ranging from £3.50 when it came to the nibbles and £15 for some of their main pasta dishes.
We opted for a selection of dishes from each section of the menu (as you can see in the photos it's all dived up into nibbles, antipasti, meats, pasta, etc.) and I have to say there was not one dish that we didn't enjoy. Everything was cooked to perfection & I really enjoyed having this tapas style service, as it meant we could all dig in & share the food (definitely my kind of lunch out since I am so greedy and love to be able to try out as much from the menu as I can).
The service was also spot on... the waiters were all super friendly & helpful, not to mention that they really knew the menu and dishes inside out so they were able to explain any queries we had whilst also giving us excellent recommendations. They were also more then accommodating when Ellie got bored after a while, wanting to go off exploring or have a little dance in the middle of the floor (as 3 year olds do).
Even though I felt like I needed to pop open a button on my jeans after the plates were all cleared, we still opted for a bit of dessert (go hard or go home as they say). We shared a selection of desserts available which were all super delicious and since I decided to stay away from the late coffee got... I ended my meal with their homemade limoncello, which was actually quite tasty (strong but tasty).
All in all I had such a great dining experience at Mercante and the whole family enjoyed the delicious food along with the great atmosphere. None of us could fault it, we left with full bellies and happy faces which is what matters most. If you're looking for great Italian food, without the fuss I highly recommend Mercante. I'll certainly be back when I get the opportunity. I'd like to be to hear your thoughts on this restaurant... Is it somewhere you would enjoy dining out?
