The Liquid Lipstick Edit

Liquid lipsticks have been trending for quite some time now, but I must admit that this year they have really boomed in popularity. Whether it's due to Kylie Jenner's pout or the perfectly defined Instagram lips, you can definitely see that matte liquid lipsticks are the hottest thing in the beauty world right now, with brands both high end and drugstore releasing their own versions. My lips are far from perfect and tend to be on the dry side of things so I rarely opt for matte lipsticks, even though I know they last so much longer on the lips. However with the constant reviews & advertisements being thrown my way, I finally decided to go on a bit of a liquid lipstick hunt. I've managed to select some of the options that get really positive reviews in the blogosphere and test them out for myself. After a couple of weeks of trying out the individual brands I'm finally ready to share my thoughts with you...

These caused quite a stir when they were first released on the Boots website and they are actually the cheapest option from my overall haul. NYX in general are a fantastic budget brand and I have especially loved their lip products so after reading tons of great reviews on the range I finally decided to pick up a shade. It took me forever to finally opt for Bedtime Flirt after researching a ton of lip swatches. I basically wanted my perfect kind of nude shade and I really feel like I got it right with this shade... in fact the whole range is focused on providing your go to nude shade and I really think there is something there for everyone judging from what I have seen online (I'm yet to find a NYX stand here in Dublin to check them out in person you see)

The applicator is a doe foot applicator, which is slightly longer and skinnier then the brand's bestselling Soft Matte Lip Creams, so I do find that application is that bit easier to really define the lips. The formula at first has a similar mousse kind of texture to the Soft Lip Creams, but feels lighter on the lips and of course it dries down to a matte finish. I do find the formula overall quite drying so your lips need to be in their best condition before you decide to wear this for the day. However they last really well throughout snacking and drinking, which I really like. It didn't completely survive a hearty meal however, but it was easily topped up without causing any kind of flaking. Overall for the price I really can't fault these NYX Lip Lingerie lippies.

Gerard Cosmetics Hydra Matte Liquid Lipstick £9.50 - shade Serenity

Another pinky nude shade, this time a bit warmer with hints of brown through it, from popular US brand Gerard Cosmetics. Beautybay stock the brand for a few months now and although I knew about them, I wasn't really pushed to try them out until I started hunting down the best liquid lipsticks and of course this range kept popping up everywhere. They are quite affordable once again coming in under £10, which is not bad for a liquid lipstick considering it looks quite high end packaging wise.

It has a typical doe food applicator and the formula feels thin, making it quite lightweight on the lips. It dries down to a matte finish but surprisingly enough it doesn't feel as drying as the NYX version. It's not moisturising either by any means and I still make sure to prep my lips well beforehand... but it definitely doesn't leave my lips looking worse. There is quite a strong sweet, vanilla scent as soon as you apply it (not exactly a fan of that), but it does fade away quickly thankfully. It lasts really well throughout the day, but again eating a main meal will smudge most of it off your lips. It can be reapplied without any worries, but I would hold off applying more than 2/3 layers max, or it will start feel tacky and sticky (not a good look). Overall I love this particular shade & how opaque the formula is, plus the fact that it doesn't dry out my lips like crazy. Another great budget option in my opinion.

Yes you read that right, I managed to get my hands on ColourPop from a UK supplier and that is Roses Beauty Store. They have a good selection from the brand on their website, but when I was placing my order a lot of it was out of stock so I ended up with this light pink shade from their Ultra Satin range. Apparently this range is not as drying as the ultra matte versions, so I was quite lucky in the end with this particular shade from what they had available.

This shade is a slightly muted bubblegum pink with warm undertones and a semi matte finish, hence why the formula isn't super drying. So as you can tell this lippie doesn't completely dry down, in fact it stays on the lips with a slightly tacky texture but nothing uncomfortable or annoying. Overall because it doesn't completely dry down to a matte finish, it also isn't as long lasting. Saying that it's still longer lasting than your typical glossy lipstick, but comfort definitely wins with this one (and I'm actually ok with that personally). However there is one thing I don't like about the lipstick and that is the scent. As soon as you start applying it to the lips, you will immediately note a very strong chemical scent. It doesn't linger around for too long, but it can be off putting if you've got a more sensitive nose like I do. For the price again they are a great budget brand and the lipstick overall gets a thumbs up from me, especially from my dry lips. If you're thinking of placing a huge Colourpop order however, I do recommend you order from their US website and then use a special courier service to the UK. Even with the extra shipping costs & maybe custom fees too, you will still end up paying cheaper prices.

Stila All Day Liquid Lipstick £16 - shade Patina

True to the name, this liquid lipstick does actually last all day... the downside however is that it tends to dry out lips a lot by the end of the day. Oh and if your lips aren't in great condition beforehand don't even think about applying it in the first place, as it will accentuate every single fine line. I do expect that with most matte liquid lipsticks so the drying effect doesn't really surprise me. However what I don't like when it comes to the formula is that it tends to feel quite heavy on the lips, it's definitely not the kind of lipstick that you can forget you're even wearing. It doesn't make the lipstick uncomfortable to wear by any means, but I'm definitely more aware of it overall.

Patina is a dusty rose mauve shade, which looks a lot lighter in the tube and even applies lighter to the lips at first. Once it dries down however it's significantly darker in tone, which I'm actually quite happy about as it's a beautiful colour but definitely something to note if you prefer a lighter nude kind of shade. The lipstick is super pigmented and opaque as applied, so you do need to be careful with how much product you apply on the lips. I have noticed that I experienced the most flaking with this one out of all options when I snacked and drank anything throughout the day, so that was my least favourite aspect of the lipstick overall. As you can see I'm still a bit unsure about this Stila option... I do love that it's long lasting, but you do pay a price for it since it can be quite drying and it's also not as lightweight as other formulas. I definitely think I need to experiment with it a bit more before I can fully make up my mind. If you have any tips for me please let me know in the comments.

Jouer Cosmetics Long-Wear Lip Creme £14 - shade Cassis

This has got to be my favourite of the bunch and it's actually a brand I only became aware of when researching the best liquid lipstick options. Again another US brand, which is stocked by Cult Beauty and it's quite well priced too. I stepped away from the nudes with this one as I opted for shade Cassis, which is a cool muted berry colour and I am loving how well it compliments my skin tone. I can even see this kind of shade being a total winner in the colder winter months, so I'm really happy with it.

The packaging is super small & sleek, with an ingenious design of being able to create your very own customised palette for on the go. Basically it has an edge that can be connected with other products from the brand... genius! The doe foot applicator is also well design in such way that it doesn't pick up too much product so you've got the perfect amount for your lips within the one application. But off course what matters most of all is the formula.. super lightweight, I literally forget I'm even wearing lipstick and long lasting without drying out the lips like crazy. Even with eating a proper meal, the fading that may occur is done so evenly with a stain left behind on the lips, so there's no patches or flaking involved here.  I am seriously impressed with these little beauties and couldn't ask for more in a liquid lipstick. Very tempted to pick up a couple more shades, especially since they even have a few metallic options available too.

So that's it from me and my current liquid lipstick obsessions... if you managed to read it all the way through then a huge fair play and thank you from me, because I know it ended up being a lengthy one. I'd love to hear what your favourite options from this list are and if you have any other personal favourites please let me know in the comment below!
