During the week I was lucky enough to be invited along to Mayfair's newest hotspot Smith & Whistle, to try out their amazing food & cocktails. I still consider myself quite new to London (even if I have been living here for almost 2 years), but when I think of Mayfair I immediately think of luxury & opulence. Smith & Whistle may be set in this luxurious background within the 5 star Sheraton Park Lane Hotel, but it doesn't focus on exclusivity. As soon as you walk through their doors, you are welcomed to a plush decor filled with so much copper throughout that I can only describe it as a bloggers dream. Smith & Whistle take inspiration from fictional characters, detective Smith and his pursuit of legendary, high-class criminal Mr. Whistle. This roaring 1920's style is easily spotted throughout the bar, which is what makes the place so unique for me, I certainly haven't come across anything like it to date. I also love the casual atmosphere despite the fact that you are essentially in the upmarket area of Mayfair.
As soon as I walked in with one of my best friends we were immediately met by friendly, smiling faces from the staff and told we could choose our own seats. We decided to sit in a cosy corner so I could really take in the art deco & overall feel of the bar. Smith & Whistle keep their focus on locally sourced beers from British artisan breweries, selection of wines from emerging English wineries and unique in-house cocktails, which explain the no fuss menu. Even though the choice available is quite limited, I prefer it this way... quality over quantity as they say. To start off we decided on two cheeky glasses of Chapel Down Brut, whilst we browsed through the food menu and decided what dishes we should share. The food focuses on British classics with a modern twist, using the finest fresh & seasonal ingredients. The dishes are designed as sharing plates, since there's not really any main courses as such, which I think is perfect for a date with your best friend. We opted for 4 individual dishes; Slow Cooked Salmon with Compress Cucumber, Crispy Mackerel with Roasted Rhubarb, S.L.T Grilled Red Poll Steak Sandwich and Curious Brew Battered Fish Fingers along with sweet potatoes fries to accompany (these weren't actually on the menu but I cheekily asked for them and no fuss was made over it, which is fantastic). Whilst we waited for the food one of the waiters kindly brought over a bowl of Marinated Olives, Bell Peppers & Cherry Tomatoes, which we certainly had fun tasting & reminiscing of how much we both loved olives (weirdos you may say but they are tasty in my opinion).
With conversation in full flow and atmosphere buzzing with many enjoying some well earned after work drinks, we didn't even realise when our waiter was back serving us our main dishes. You know the saying "your eyes are bigger than your belly"? Well that certainly happened in this case, but we're no quitters so we tried our best to finish up all of the delicious options. Our favourites had to be the steak sandwich which was cooked to perfection and had so much flavour to it... Along with the unique fish & chips which literally melted in your mouth and probably the best I've ever had. With stuffed bellies (literally) we asked if we could chill out for a little while tasting one of their cocktails before being tempted by their desserts. This was once again not fussed over and we were immediately brought over the cocktail list. I loved just how unique the available options are... there wasn't a single Classic in sight as you're met with a handful of their signature cocktails instead. Of course if we didn't want to be adventurous, we were told that they could make up anything we wished for... However we decided to step on the wild side and order Knots & Crosses for myself and His Last Bow for my friend. The cocktails were prepared with such detail and passion, so it was no surprise that we both loved our options... super tasty and went down a treat over a good chit chat.
Eventually we decided that looking at the dessert list might not be a bad idea after all and with two choices available we decided to indulge in both (Gingerbread & Bramley Apple Pudding, Chocolate & Whisky Tart), along with a cappuccino each. When the order was brought out we were both stunned by the amazing coffee art and we almost didn't want to drink these cappuccinos, as they were so impressive. Of course we did eventually after many photos and we also shared the two desserts. This couldn't have been a better end to our meal as they just tasted delicious and were perfectly prepared.
I couldn't have imagined a better evening out, so to say that I enjoyed my time spent in Smith & Whistle would be an understatement. The decor & overall atmosphere were perfect, the staff were friendly & attentive, and the food/drinks were absolutely delightful. There's seriously nothing I could fault and I want to thank the waiters on the night Brian, Kamal & Elias for an amazing experience, along with the rest of the team behind Smith & Whistle for providing me with this opportunity. So in short if your looking to discover your new local, were you can enjoy delicious food, exclusive cocktails in unique and modern surroundings, not to mention the super affordable prices... Then Smith & Whistle is definitely worth visiting.
